Chicano artist awakens universal consciousness for all.

Stevon Lucero is an artist. He has been painting what he sees, hears and experiences for nearly forty years. Five hundred years ago when the Spanish Conquistadors brought their priest to the “New World” (Mexico) where Lucero's ancestors were born, those like him would have been embraced with an open fire pit. That's what you do to heretics. Even by today's standards, Lucero could be considered a very dangerous man. When folks in Denver refer to him as the visionary Chicano artist, they aren't just whistling De Colores .

CHAC member Meggan Rodriguez DeAnza learned how to make santos by viewing images in museums and then attempting to make them herself. As an influential art teacher, she's taught about santos at the Denver Art Museum, the Museo de las Americas, the Public Education Coalition, Artes del Pueblo, the Chicano Humanities and Arts Council, the Chile Harvest Festival, and the Aurora Historical Society. DeAnza is one of 194 artists profiled in the book titled “Contemporary Chicana and Chicano Art-Artists, Works, Culture, and Education Volumes 1&2.”

Suzanna has been a CHAC member for several years. Over the years Suzanna has served on the board and several committees. As a poet she has participated in poetry performances at CHAC and other cultural venues.

Suzanna has been a dedicated volunteer and works every chance she gets. She helps out in the tiendita, organizes poetry events and help out with whatever she can.

From time honored traditional styles to sensational contemporary pieces, the body of art produced by Carlos is memorable for its range of influences and cultural sensitivity. Mr. Santistevan is the founder of El Grito de Aztlan Gallery, the first Chicano art gallery in the United States and was also one of the founders and the first Executive Director of CHAC.
