Kids Art Saturday: April Fools in March

April Fools in March will be held on the third Saturday, March 20 from 2 to 4 PM

March is known as “el mes de los locos”, the month of the crazy happenings. In the north part of Mexico March is a time of crazy winds that gave birth to many legends. Come hear the legend of Juanito and see how the wind played what we would call an April Fools trick with a happy outcome on him. You will make a mosaic in clay. Suggested donation $1.00

CHAC Norte Featured Artists

Fernando Duran Alcantar

Fernando Duran-Alcantar was born on February 8, 1976 in Mexico City, Mexico. Fernando started drawing at a young age and his ability to draw almost anything was soon noticed by family members and teachers.

Cinco de Mayo, Mexican Independence Day, and other major events and celebrations inspired his series of paintings that portray traditional rituals of Mexico's pre-Columbian cultures and regional dances. While some people choose to keep Mexico's culture alive through dance, Fernando is preserving its history, identity, and folklore through his art.

He prefers not to categorize his technique and style, but best describes it as a combination of precise planning with quick strokes while the paint is wet; capturing movement and energy. His paintings are reflections of his emotions and impulses guided by the endless choices and directions that the canvas provides and becomes.

Stevon Lucero

Stevon Lucero has been painting for over forty years. Since childhood, he has experienced lucid dreams and visions and ventured more then once into separate realities. Through these revelations and studies of metaphysical, philosophical, and historical media, he has been guided to create two unique art forms: Metarealism and Neo-Precolumbian or Aztec art.

Dominic Domingo

Dominic Domingo, a native of Colorado, is a naturally talented artist offering a unique style and wide array of deliverance. Dominic is a self taught artist who was drawn to art as a child. With his unique ability to work with multiple techniques, he creates his pieces using oils, acrylics and watercolors. While he is a firm believer that he was blessed with his talent, Dominic affirms “My artwork is a reflection of me.”

New artist James Mascarenas will be debuting his new collection at CHAC on first Friday in March. James is a Denver native and has been involved in art most of his life. He has been described as "creating what he sees." This is very evident in his bright colored realistic work with subject matter from Barack Obama to the Denver Broncos. james has an amazing sense of humor and a great love of life!

Kid's Art Saturday -- 3rd Saturday, Feb 20th

On February 20th, CHAC continues its Saturday Children’s workshops of celebrating the monthly traditions of Mexico led by Rita Flores de Wallace. Rita is from Saltillo, Coahuila, Mexico where she learned many of Mexico’s traditions and enjoyed many authentic celebrations. Since she has been in Denver, Rita has tirelessly brought her knowledge, coupled with hands-on art-crafts, to the people of Denver. Now she is working with CHAC to pass along experiences of Mexico’s varied celebrations.

CHAC invites you to come and celebrate with us. Share the stories of how your family celebrates these occasions, or learn about the rich heritage of lesser known celebrations.

February's celebration: Dia de la Candelaria

Processions, songs, instruments are all part of Dia de la Candelaria (Day of the Candles), celebrated on February 2nd. (Ours will be held on the third Saturday from 2 to 4 pm as usual.) As with most Mexican celebrations, this, is a combination of Catholic and native Mexican traditions. Come learn about the fusion of these two traditions and the “blessing” of the animals. On third Saturday, bring your pet or favorite stuffed animal. As you participate in this workshop. Your will have an opportunity to make a dancing animal puppet. Suggested donation $1.00

CHAC Welcomes Su Teatro

CHAC sends out kudos and a big BIENVENIDOS! to Su Teatro who has now purchased the Denver Civic Theatre on 215 Santa Fe Drive. Su Teatro is run by Artistic Director Tony Garcia who considers this a "sacred space" for our people. Please see their website Su Teatro

An Artist's Story: Corvain

In June of 2005, I suffered an accident that changed my whole life.

Rock-climbing at Rainbow Falls, I experienced a 40 ft. fall, hitting a rock, face first and then falling into the water, unconscious under the falls. My companion scrambled down the rocks to look for me and found me underwater, face, ribs, wrists and spine fractured, bleeding and drowning. She pulled me from the water and stuck a finger down my throat causing me to regurgitate water in my lungs. In the sand near my unconcious body, she found a ring and assuming it was mine, she picked it up.

The paramedics arrived in time for my lungs to collapse. They managed to get a breathing tube into me and rush me to the hospital. Unfortunately, they collapsed again at the hospital and a machine was breathing for me.

After doing emergency surgery on my face, my blood oxygen level would not go over 48. The minimum level for heathly tissue is 80. The doctors gave my family three options for my prognosis. My brain and heart were the only organs remaining functional. Either I would die, I would be brain-dead or I would be crippled. My family could do nothing but pray.

On July 4th, 2005, weeks after the accident. I finally awoke and was able to complete my first sentence to my family, “No matter what, I will always love God.” With improvement I was able to start physical therapy but more problems were on the way. I could no longer keep food down and I went back on breathing tubes again. More surgery was discussed. Finally, with medical help, I began to digest food and gain weight. The doctors looked at me as a miracle patient after having me declared a lost cause seven times.

In August, I began to learn to speak and walk. However, my attitude was still down because I could not properly work with my hands and I had lost the use of one eye which made it impossible to do my art. During my rehabilitation at my Aunt’s house, she showed me some beautiful wood carvings created by a one-eyed man who only has seven fingers. The light dawned on me that I would adapt and learn again.

When I saw my companion from the day of the accident, she gave me the ring she found in the sand next to my dying body. “It is not mine,” I told her. She replied, “it is now,” and placed it on my finger. I have never removed it since. My life has changed. My art has returned and I welcome you to see it this month at CHAC.

Rob Yancey

Rob began as a self taught wood carver who enjoys studying and creating Spanish Colonial and Latino art. Through his artwork, Rob tries to invoke the words of Do Hyun Choe, “Stillness is what creates love, movement is what creates life, to be still, yet moving…that is everything. Rob’s goal is to produce art work in a non-dualistic mindset and allow the Creator to infect those who are searching for their identity and purpose, even when they appear to have no soul.

Tammy is the self proclaimed mud pie queen and bug aficionado who creates jewelry that is inspired by her love of nature and the beautiful colors she sees along the way of her life both past and present. She spent many childhood summers in San Juan, New Mexico on her family’s ranch getting connected to the earth and the dramatic colors that would lend themselves to her future jewelry making passion. The Chicano Humanities & Arts Council announces an exciting new offering! Have you heard of the Crafty Chica, Kathy Cano Murillo? Well, now you can experience the Crafty Chica first hand at CHAC! Kathy, the “queen of Latina style”, is a multi-talented writer and designer. She is the founder of the podcast and website CraftyChica.com , which receives almost one million hits per month!

Maria Lopez "Supersize Santos"

Maria Lopez is a professional visual artist and a Pueblo, Colorado native. Her range is wide and paints representationally abstract paintings,still-lifes, landscapes on-location, and figure drawing. She earned a Master’s degree in painting from Boston University. She previously worked for The Museum of Modern Art in New York City in the Office of the Chief-Curator-at-Large.

Jolt: "Just Painted"

Employing wordplay, Jolt has developed a character called the guerilla gorilla. The playful character embodies Urban Nature—he is both wild and civilized. GuerillaGarden, which is the name of Jolt’s company, references a movement that originated in New York City in the early 1970s. CHAC Heart Show Needs Your Help

Our annual Milagros del Corazon is almost upon us. Artists can pick up their wooden hearts for decorating starting the beginning of January.

As you know, this annual event is one of the most important fundraisers of the year and it brings in folks from all over town. Volunteers are needed to be on the Heart Show Committee. This includes set up and take down, preparations, PR, sponsorships, decorating, cutting hearts, food & beverage, donations and several other items. Call Crystal at CHAC as soon as you can to sign up! We need several eager and talented people.

The heart show will be held on the second Friday of February. Stay tuned for notice of the location and other details are to be announced soon!

Meet the Staff -- Julie Marino

Brand spanking new Educational Coordinator, Julie Marino will be coordinating educational programming, conducting teachers training, developing new programs that will include some lectures, presentation and senior and adult programs. She will also be writing cultural arts programing for all levels that include State Standards and highlight cultural traditions and customs.

Julie has 11 years experience as a certified Art teacher, plus 14 years experience in museum education. She has constructed curriculum for two charters schools in Jefferson county as well as for organizations such as the Denver Museum of Nature and Science, Museo de las Americas, Denver Botanic Gardens, VSA gallery, and CHAC.

CHAC gets a Shot in the Arm from DOCA

CHAC Receives $12,000 from DOCA in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) Funds

On September 10, 2009, The Denver Office of Cultural Affairs (DOCA) announced that CHAC will receive $12,000 in federal recovery funds to restore the Education Coordinator position.

The grant administered by DOCA, is part of American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) funds allocated to the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) to help combat job loss in the arts due to declining philanthropic and other support in the current economic climate. This one-time funding allocation allowed DOCA to distribute grants according to narrow federal guidelines designed to ensure job preservation and restoration in the arts and cultural sector over the next year.

The Denver Office of Cultural Affairs has awarded CHAC $12,000 to reinstate the position of Education Coordinator. This key position will allow CHAC to continue to provide and grow innovative and educational programming that greatly benefits numerous Colorado communities. These funds will provide the resources for this part time position to continue from October 1, 2009 through September 30, 2010.

Julie Marino has been chosen to fill this new position. Julie received a Bachelor of Science degree in Studio Art and Certification to teach Art k-12 from Nazareth college of Rochester. She also received a Master’s of Science degree in Museum Studies with a concentration in anthropology from the University of Colorado in Boulder.

In her work, Julie has been part of a three time Colorado School of Excellence and a nationally award winning Charter School. She has curated and judged art shows and directed and inspired students and youth into the fields of art and art education. She has successfully worked with college/adult interns, training and guiding them into the fields of museum education and art education. Julie has developed and evaluated numerous informal hands-on learning experiences, to enrich and engage students’ formal classroom learning. Her programs fulfill multiple Colorado state standards.
In addition, Julie is a working illustrator. She has illustrated for companies, museums, and places of education. She has most recently been published with her book illustrations and educational products, through Whole Spirit Press. Throughout her high schools years, Julie was apprenticed in illustration in Rochester, NY, by one of Rochester’s, acclaimed illustrators, Dick Luby. During her college years she trained with six of America’s top illustrators.

Julie’s accomplishments include exhibiting at the Master Eagle Art Gallery in New York City and running her own business providing travelling exhibits, educational programming and a cultural market to area museums, schools, libraries, and senior centers. In her business, Cultural Interpretations, Julie works as curator, anthropologist, and cultural historian directly with people of indigenous heritage to understand their life experience. She has created Cultural Interpretations as a voice for the people, in order to bring meaning and enrichment to our lives, underscoring the common human experience that unites us all. She has served on boards, such as the Santa Fe Arts District, Alianza de las Artes Americanas, and has been recently appointed to the board of the Colorado, Wyoming Association of Museums. She has participated in an Archaeological dig with Penn State and the Harvard field school at Tiawanaku, Bolivia. Julie has been a speaker and presenter at the National conference of Core Knowledge schools, and the Latin American Heritage camps. As Director of Education at Museo de las Americas (2002-2005) she increased workshop/tour participants from 11,000 to over 24,000.

Rob Yancey began as a self taught wood carver, who enjoys studying and creating Spanish Colonial art.Throughout this whole process Rob has stuck with his goal to produce art work in a non-dualistic mindset and allow the Creator to touch those who are searching for their identity and purpose, even when they appear to have no soul. Creating something sacred out of wood is what inspires Rob to keep carving. Rob now studies under master carvers Joe Sikora and Bob Zettler.

Recently, Rob started primative folk painting as a way to express the beautiful landscapes he sees as he travels throughout Colorado and New Mexico. He is currently working on a sereis of paintings titled Slices of Life.

As an artist, educator and community member I am asking for your help in supporting CHAC.

Dia de los Muertos is fast approaching and we need your help to make this event successful. This year the celebration begins on Friday, October 23rd with a fantastic exhibition of altars and artwork titled, “El Dia De Los Muertos” – A celebration of Life! Our opening night festivities will include Aztec Dancers, historic Mexican refreshments and face painting. In addition, we will have children’s programming that includes traditional storytelling, dancing, gallery tours and, the children’s favorite, making the sugar skulls!

We are able to provide such wonderful events through grants, membership and your support!

Last year we were able to host 75 children who rode the bus to CHAC. We provided them with a tour, refreshments and a performance by the Aztec dancers. Other children were not so lucky. We had several schools wanting to take part in our actives but they did not have funds to do so. Your support is crucial! Chile Harvest Festival 2009

Thanks to a partnership between the City of Lakewood and the Chicano Humanities & Arts Council (CHAC), the 2009 Chile Harvest Festival will be in full swing Aug 29 & 30 at the beautiful Lakewood Heritage Center on Wadsworth and Ohio. The festival will feature up to 65 artists showcasing both contemporary and traditional art forms. There will also be music, food, dancing and storytelling as well as many other cultural and art activities for the kids.

This powerfully emotional exhibition is a collaborative effort celebrating the connection of the earth and its people of Native American, non Native, Hispanic and Indigenous cultures. These artists have come together to demonstrate the strength and power in diversity.

The time of the Red Moon, which occurs in the fall, represents harvest, bounty and the blessings of life's gifts. The art exhibit is likewise filled witha mixture of photography, mixed mediums, paintings, prints, books, jewelry, bead work and sculptures. While a Native American theme can be discerned in the focus of the show, the indiidual atists lean towards creating their own distinct styles. The artists' works integrate a wide variety of influences including abstract, modernism, pop art, as well as pieces that reference traditional indigenous art.

For over 40 years, Hal has been a tireless advocate of photographic art, and is himself a master photographer. He is owner of Camera Obscura Gallery in Denver since 1979. He has received numerous awards, among which are the prestigious National Award...the Gold Medal Grand Prize in the International Federation of Photographer’s Competition in Riga, Latvia.

Loretta Young-Gautier

Her work was formed by an early fascination with the Surrealist style of Rene Magritte, Remedios Varo and Giorgio de Chirico. She has continued in this vein, exhibiting her work in numerous group and solo shows, over the last twenty years. Loretta is currently Associate Director of Camera Obscura Gallery.

Leyna Bencomo has been involved with CHAC for over ten years to a greater or lesser extent. She has displayed her artwork in the gallery including jewelry, stained glass, and ceramics. Although she is involved in outside professions and is currently a full time student, she always returns home to CHAC when she needs to feel grounded.

Born and raised in Denver, Ara Cruz is a Xicano/Indigenous (Mexica/Tiwa) spoken word artist, teacher, and organizer who finds himself standing on the shoulders of those women and men who have struggled to maintain traditions and dignity. With this strong sense of responsibility, he tries to walk in a good way everyday in order to better his community. Graduating from the University of Colorado at Boulder with a B.A. in Ethnic Studies (emphasis in Chicana/o and American Indian Studies), he now works with youth in Denver as a teacher and presenter. Using the experience he gained in campus and community organizing through MEChA (Movimiento Estudiantil Chican@ de Aztlan) and other organizations, Ara became a co-founder of Café Cultura. It serves not only as a monthly open mic, but also provides a community space for Indigenous people (North and South) to come together and share energy, words, and struggles. Knowing his talents are a gift from Ometeotl, the Creator, he has shared his flor y canto (flower and song) with people of all ages. Through his poetry, he attempts to place a smoking mirror in front of his people and society in general, in an effort to make all of us think, speak, and act in positive ways. In that spirit, he has taught poetry and spoken word workshops at youth conferences and local schools. Ademas, he has performed at middle and high schools throughout the Denver area as well as at conferences, universities, protests, and fundraisers throughout Coloraztlanahuac and the “Southwest.” He has had the honor of sharing the stage with Trinidad Sanchez Jr., Slam Nuba, Debajo del Agua, Savage Family, El Vuh, Chicano Messengers of Spoken Word, Cihuatl-Ce, Guerrilla Queenz, Read Nex, Almas Intocables, and Olmeca. August Just Got Hotter in Lakewood!
Chile Harvest Festival August 29 & 30
at Lakewood’s Heritage Center

This summer, a Colorado tradition will bring people to Lakewood’s Heritage Center to celebrate traditional and contemporary Spanish Colonial art, music, food and chiles, chiles, chiles. Thanks to a partnership between the City of Lakewood and the Chicano Humanities & Arts Council, the Chile Harvest Festival will be in full swing August 29 & 30 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m . at Lakewood’s Heritage Center (Wadsworth and Ohio), 801 S. Yarrow Street. Tickets are $6 for adults, $3 for children (ages 3-12). With plenty of free parking available.

The festival will feature up to 45 artists, showcasing both contemporary and traditional art forms including music, dancing and storytelling as well as many other cultural and art activities for the kids.

Several local restaurants will be on site, serving authentic Mexican cuisine along with other specialty foods featuring chiles. And of course, there will be nonstop chile roasting, so stock-up your freezer with chiles for the winter. Demonstrators will be showcasing the art of making traditional chile ristras: dried chiles strung together to be used in cooking throughout the year or just for decoration.

The Chile Harvest Festival is an outreach effort to educate, enlighten and entertain the community with the many different facets of Chicano and Latino culture. Its goal is to give people a well-rounded cultural experience. Proceeds from the event support HCA and CHAC programs.

Lakewood Heritage, Culture & the Arts programs are made possible in part through funding from the Scientific and Cultural Facilities District (SCFD) – metro Denver's unique commitment to its nonprofit art, science and cultural institutions and the Denver Post. Joe is a native of Denver, Colorado. He resides in the north Denver area, and is a retiree of the supermarket business. He enjoys photography as a hobby. Most of his photography is of Colorado and New Mexico landscapes. Joe is a self-taught photographer.

Joe’s photographs have appeared at Chac Gallery, Taza de Cafe and Metal Master at Heritage Square. Joe’s color photographs were selected for Chac Art Galleries 4th annual regional photography Exhibition in 2007 and was awarded third place.

"I have enjoyed photography since I was young. And used my Mom’s old Polaroid SX 70 camera. Today I use a Nikon 35 mm SLR film camera. When I take my photos, it is therapy, a feeling of Serenity, A calming of my mind-just me and My camera and what I see through the lens. It's a changing world, and soon it will become a homogeneous world. I don't much care for that idea, so I'm trying to see different cultures and unspoiled lands while they still exist. Along the way I'll be snapping photos for you all to enjoy.

While some people are willing to lug around their gear everywhere, I am not. The mere presence of a large camera being pulled out causes the spontaneity around you to break down (plus I'm just too lazy.) Often my shots are "from the hip" so the subject is unaware I'm even taking a photo. I hope you enjoy them.

CHAC News: FCC Doll Auction

On May 15, CHAC Norte hosted a benefit party and auction for the Family Crisis Center, operated by Denver Human Services. Forty-five dolls were custom dressed and painted by young artists, all of whom are clients of the FCC.

Creative concepts for the finished dolls ranged from a creature out of an “alien” movie to a showgirl decked in sequins and feathers. Total funds raised were $1400, of which $305 goes directly to the young artists, and $1095 to the FCC recreation program.

CHAC News: The Denver Foundation Grant

CHAC proudly announces $14,000 in grant money donated by The Denver Foundation. CHAC’s long history of nurturing and preserving Chicano/Latino culture, its ongoing cultural outreach and educational programs, and its determination to build on its strengths, were all factors in the decision to award the grant.

A similar grant totaling $20,000 over two years from Hispanics in Philanthropy and the Latino Community Foundation of Colorado will enable us to seek professional input in some areas we’ve identified as needing development. Expanding our donor base, developing a long-term fundraising plan, and enhancing fundraising capabilities among our board members are among our top priorities in a “sustainable growth” plan for CHAC.

Me, Myself and Frida - A big success!

Mid-June, CHAC hosted 21 young and enthusiastic self-portraitists from Casa Start Program, at a “Me and Frida” class led by Jeremy Ulibarri. Kids learned something about the work of Frida Kahlo, and something about themselves in the process of creating their own portraits.

Call for Entries - Access Gallery - Word Up

Access Gallery is pleased to present our first annual Juried Exhibit – Word Up, calling artists to create and submit artworks that include a written word or language within the art piece.

Throughout time, the world has viewed words/language as a grouping of symbols, characters or letters. This July, the Access Gallery will look at words as an art form through the submissions of artists. The selection of artworks that will be exhibited will be juried on the following criteria: 1. Best approach to theme of exhibit. 2. Best use and representation/expression of the word(s). 3. Aesthetic and creative approach to theme. 4. Best in Show.

Deadline for Submissions: July 6- 7, 2009, 6:00pm MST
Artwork will be delivered to VSA/Access Gallery at 909 Santa Fe Drive, Denver, CO July 6 or 7 from noon to 6:00 pm.
Exhibit Dates: July 17- August 7
Artist Reception: July 17
First Friday Reception: August 7
Juror: TBA
Criteria: The only requirement is that a written word be visible in the piece.
Details: Submissions are $10 per piece. Maximum 3 entries per artist. Size not to exceed 3’ x 4’. All pieces must be wired or otherwise ready and stable to hang. Artists works that are not selected for exhibit will be notified to pick up submission by July 15. We are unable to store work that is not selected. VSA/Access Gallery reserves the right to not exhibit artworks that are not gallery ready or stable to install, deemed unsuitable, fragile or inappropriate.

Awards: All awards will be appointed by our juror and will be presented to the artists opening night, July 17, 2009.
Best of Show – will receive $50 and a 2010 studio show at the Access Gallery.
Cash Prizes – $50 prizes
Artists will receive 70% of the sale of their work.
Please drop off work at Access Gallery 909 Santa Fe Drive Artwork that is selected will be hanging in the gallery from July 17 – August 14 and can be picked up (unless sold) on Friday, August 14 from 12pm–6pm or August 15 from 10am–2pm.

CHAC Children’s Programs

Thanks to a grant from the SCFD, we host a wealth of classes at a modest cost, geared for children and young people from preschool to high school age. We’ve also partnered with Access Gallery to offer programs for at-risk and special needs youngsters. These are hands-on classes taught by qualified practicing artists, and they encourage kids to explore the world around them through the creative process.

Classes aren’t limited to the school year – they enrich not only classroom programs, but would be wonderful enhancements to summer camp activities. Scholarships are available.

Chile Harvest Festival

This year in Lakewood! August 29th and 30th

Late summer brings freshly harvested chiles to Colorado, and with them, the aromas of chile roasting and authentic Chicano cuisine. This year, a Colorado tradition finds a new home at Lakewood’s Heritage Center. The Chile Harvest Festival will celebrate contemporary Chicano art, traditional Spanish Colonial art, music, food and of course chiles, with beautiful views of the Rocky Mountain foothills as a backdrop. Thanks to a partnership between the City of Lakewood and the Chicano Humanities & Arts Council (CHAC), the Chile Harvest Festival will be in full swing Aug 29 & 30.

The Chile Harvest Festival is an outreach effort to educate, enlighten and entertain the community with the many different facets of Chicano and Latino culture. Its goal is to give people a well-rounded cultural experience.

The festival will feature up to 65 artists, showcasing both contemporary and traditional art forms. There will also be music, dancing and storytelling as well as many other cultural and art activities for the kids.

Several local restaurants will be on site, serving authentic Mexican cuisine along with other specialty foods featuring chiles. And of course, there will be nonstop chile roasting, so stock up your freezer with chiles for the winter. Demonstrators will be showcasing the art of making traditional chile ristras: dried chiles, strung together to be used in cooking throughout the year or just for decoration.

Bring the whole family to shop, eat and soak up a cultural experience. Tickets will be $6 for adults, $3 for children, and $1 off coupons will be available from participating sponsors.
